a story that's eerily similar to the sarah palin's post-election defeat plan. this time it's paul ryan whose future is being leaked about by his supporters who are fairly, clearly assuming that they are about to lose and they need to think of something else for paul ryan to do because he's not going to be busy as vice president. publically ryan and allies maintain that momentum is behind the romney/ryan ticket, but his biggest boosters realize he can write his own ticket. these allies spoke on the condition to discuss private proposals they were preparing for him. if romney loses, ryan will be seen as a white house contender in 2016 just like sarah palin was in 2012. for the next few years, democrats would lay traps forcing them to take sides on measures to come back to haunt him. that's why ryan's biggest boosters are considering why it wouldn't be better for paul ryan to resign from the house. he could write a book. or he could teach at a university. days before the election, paul ryan's supporters are leaking their plans to the press for what they want paul ryan to do since he's not

is in the minds of all americans including on the campaign trail. here is vice presidential nominee paul ryan a short while ago in ohio? >> let's today when we get home, put in our prayers the people who are in the east coast in the wake of this big storm that is coming. let's not forget those fellow americans of ours. >> gregg: doug is live in delaware where residents are anxiously preparing for sandy? >> it is basically here right now. winds are gusting probably about 30 miles an hour. gusting a bit more than that. gust comes along and knocks you off your feet a little bit. this is shaping up in this area as a classic storm coming out of north-northeast. it is typically in this region. nor'easters cause more damage than hurricanes. it's called the ash wednesday storm of 1962, johnf. kennedy was president. hundreds of buildings were destroyed in this area, literally thousands of buildings were badly damaged. president kennedy declared a disaster area. because of that and characteristics of this storm so closely mirror that, the governor of delaware has called for a mandatory evacuation all p

serious is this? we'll have the details. and paul ryan hasn't helped mitt romney a bit in wisconsin. now the congressman may have trouble hanging on to his own house seat. john nichols will join me with that. we'll be right back. >>> thanks for staying with us tonight. four days out, and the state of the race favors president obama. seriously. now if you look at it, it is never a lock, never going to be a lock. but the facts are here, in the swing states offering president obama is a clear path to victory. he's ahead in the polls and he's rising. in ohio, you've got president obama, he's been leading all along, and as you can see in the latest poll, averaged from real clear politics, he still is. this is why mitt romney is desperately campaigning in pennsylvania. it is a hail mary pass because he knows he's probably going to lose ohio. in wisconsin, president obama maintains a comfortable five-point lead. president obama is also maintaining his lead in nevada. in iowa, president obama is still ahead. the national average is closer, but president obama has been on the rise there as well.

to be back in iowa. [applause] don't think this is the last you're going to see of me and paul ryan. this state may be the state that decides what kind of an america we're going to have and what kind of lives our families are going to have. we're counting on you. and the choice you make this november will shape great things. historic things. and those things will determine the most important and intimate things in our lives. in the lives of our homes, our families, our loved ones. this is an election about america. it's an election about the american family. now all leches matter, of course. but this one matters a great deal. over the years of our nation's history, choices our fellow citizens have made have changed the country's course. they were turning points of defining consequence. we're today at a turning point. our national debt and liabilities threaten to crush our future. our economy struggles under the weight of government and fails to create the essential growth and employment we need. the same -- at the same time, emerging powers seek to shape the world in their image. ch

will be better than the past. [applause] if paul ryan and i are elected we will endeavor with all our hearts and energy to restore america. instead of more spending and more borrowing and more taxes, we'll renew our faith in the power of free people. we'll have a plan for a stronger middle class that has five elements. one we're going to put america on track to a balanced budget by eliminating unnecessary programs and send programs back to state and by shrinking the bureaucracy in washington. number two, we'll produce more of the energy we need to heat our homes, fill our cars and make our economy grow. we will stop the obama war on coal and the effort to crimp natural gas and the very technology that produces it. [applause] we're going to support nuclear and renewables and phase out once an industry is on its feet. and rather than vesting in solar we'll invest in signs science and research and by 2020 we will achieve north american energy independence. [applause] we'll make trade work for america. we'll open more markets for american agriculture and we'll hold accountable any nation that do

realize that it was paul ryan and the ideological republican tea party caucus that tried to cut that budget by $300 million so that the president and joe biden and secretary clinton didn't have enough money as they requested to try to provide security. so you get caught up in these things. yeah, they have -- they get amnesia, or romnesia, however you want to speak about it, when you talk about foreign policy and they forget that it was president bush. that got us into the worst foreign policy debacle in the history of this country. we will be digging ourselves out of the hole in iraq for a long, long time. because of failed intelligence and a variety of other thins. these guys remained -- remind me of a sports announcer. you watch the beginning of the football team and the analyst says, this team is going to win for sure, this is going to be a blowout. then the game is over and they were wrong they don't mention that they were wrong and made bad predicts. that's what these guys remind me of. you guys cause halved of these problems, 3/4 of these problems and you turn around and t

are also going nonstop. vice president joe biden in colorado today, and paul ryan in pennsylvania, virginia, florida, and ohio. ohio could be the biggest battleground of the election, and the race there is tight. a just released cnn-orc poll shows obama ahead by just three points, well within the margin of error. an nbc "wall street journal" marist poll shows a wider gap with obama leading by six points. president obama is speaking at a rally in mentor, ohio, in hour. dan lothian is there along with him. dan, good morning. ohio certainly critical to these candidates. what line of attack is the president expected to take there to widen his lead? >> well, you know, randi, it continues to be one that focus on the auto industry. i'm told by a campaign official that the president will continue that theme that he was pushing yesterday while campaigning here in ohio, that the auto bailout which he pushed, which he says that mitt romney did not support, helped to save thousands of jobs here in an area that the auto industry is very critical to employment here, so that's the theme that the president

in dubuque. back to you. >> in about 30 minutes we'll hear from paul ryan, campaigning for mitt romney in battleground virginia my home state. must be slightly awkward for him today given politico's exclusive story saying ryan wasn't romney ace first choice for vp, it was chris christie. so jonathan what do you make of these reports, your out let there. politico saying romney was planning on going with christie and after his trip to israeling changed his mind? >> there was a significant intrigue going on even as these candidates are rumbling, stumbling and bumbling around the country in the last week if i can borrow your keith jackson refrain there. >> can you have it, actually. i don't think i'll be doing that again. >> mike allen and jim from politico reported chris christie was the number one choice for mitt romney at one point, he went to london for the olympics, came back and ended up picking paul ryan. there's a lot of bad blood right now between the romney campaign and the chris christie folks and we're seeing that spill out here right in the last couple of days. >> you know, le

it is streaming live. wisconsin is in play. governor mitt romney choosing congressman paul ryan from wisconsin as his running mate kho ko change things there after more two decades since a republican candidate has won the state of wisconsin. president obama took wisconsin by over 14 points over mccain in 2008. once again, live from milwaukee, wisconsin, president obama and you can watch it in the entirety streaming live on foxnews.com. at the time the republican congress, any senate candidate by the name of mitt romney, no, no, don't boo, vote. vote. voting is the best revenge. >> gregg: president obama sparking outrage at a ohio rally telling supporters that voting is the best revenge, whatever that means. its comment that governor romney took issue with while addressing supporters earlier today. >> he asked his supporters to vote for revenge, for revenge. instead i ask the american people to vote for love of country. >> mark sanford joins us, governor, great to talk to you. voting is the best revenge, i'm not sure i know what that means or who voters are supposed to exact revenge against, it

romney get over the top? he would if he won wisconsin, paul ryan's home state. 10 electoral votes right there. logic being if the president's winning ohio, these are two very similar states. so wisconsin would be one model and let's just say for the sake of argument that one did stay blue, that puts the president right there. governor romney would have to get there by winning in nevada, not enough, and new hampshire. so you see governor romney would essentially almost have to run the board without ohio. the president has more options if he loses ohio, because he starts closer to 270. so is it impossible for governor romney to win without this one? no. but is it improbable, yes. anderson? >> that's why they're sfeng pen so much time in ohio. let's take a view right now from the ground level. jim acosta is with the romney campaign in north canton, ohio. brian brianna keilar is at the white house. is the romney campaign showing any signs of concern over their ability to win ohio? >> i just talked to a senior romney advisor who said no, they are going to win ohio, but he did say this race i

decisive action when lives are at risk. unlike mitt romney and paul ryan, who said that they would bloc grant fema funding to states. states are having fiscal problems and that responsibility would fall to them. it's so unfortunate that we have people that take these ex prem p -- extreme positions just to score political points. when you're in harm's way you don't want a private company that's trying to save money. you want a government that will do what is required to save lives and that's not the policy that mitt romney or his twin paul ryan have advanced while they have been in office. they have done just the opposite unfortunately. >> mayor reed, i'm sorry to press you on this, but isn't that the point of the way these gentlemen have been speaking? this is their patently clear philosophy, and yet when it collides with reality on a day like this, it's not something that the people of america like at all. the idea that we're going to make the responsibility for emergency relief not just in the hands of the states but preferably according to mr. romney in the hands of private businesse

these battleground states. he is in wisconsin. members of his team has said wisconsin is in play paul ryan, that is his home state. the president giving the stump speech he has prepare and passionately delivering across the country. i want to let you see some other battleground state newspaper headlines. you can see how this playing out at least in some of those papers. first, florida orlando sentinel. get out the vote. smart phones and cab lets are being used as weapons in the final battle. in the new hampshire valley news, they say the state braces for voter id. those who don't have a photo id will be able to vote in new hampshire, they'll just have to sign an affidavit attesting they are who they say they are. an a headline in the telegraph herald, voter turnout already. 29%, 43% of early voters are registered democrats. 32%, republican. joining us once again, nbc news senior political editor mark murray. we listened to the president's stump speech, that's the speech he has been giving now, the same speech throughout the country. obviously the message there is interesting in that bill c

be in play with congressman paul ryan on the gop ticket. we'll bring you the president's remarks live from milwaukee as soon as they get things started there. >>> and after weeks of polls that put the race up in the air, there are signs the president is solidifying a top position in the race. take a look at this. two new nbc news "wall street journal" polls, pairist polls shows the president holding on to a six-point lead in ohio. you know the importance of that state by now. and two points ahead of governor romney in florida. but within the margin of error. also, early voting in florida ends today after the number of early voting days in that state is cut by half this year. 25 million people have already voted early in 34 states and washington, d.c. >>> and back to the frenetic pace on the campaign trail. both candidates have already held rallies in new hampshire, iowa, and wisconsin. >> you do want to be able to trust your president. you want to know -- you want to know that -- that your president means what he says and says what he means. after four years of president, you know me. you

talk about it but who can do it. paul ryan and i plan on putting in place real change from day one. across america, people have talked about our five-point plan. we will take full advantage of our energy resources: coal, oil, gas, nuclear renewables and review our regulations to make sure burning coal is done clean but not kill the industry like the epa has done. we will double the number of permits on federal lands and federal waters for drilling and oil and gas. day one we were take steps to get the pipeline from canada built. we will get north america on track to be energy independent in eight years. that means less cost to fill up the tank, less cost to heat your home. and if you are cutting steel and bending it, it take as lot of energy the manufacturing cares deeply about the cost of energy. if we take advantage of our natural gas and oil and coal we will have low-cost energy bringing more manufacturing back. it will make this company do better. energy is so key to our nation. that is why one of the first things we will do is get america on track to energize security. i want

believe that mitt romney and paul ryan as vice president would bring about a reversal of some of the last government policies that will cripple this country. we haven't seen what's going to happen as a result of the obama healthcare policy, and dodd-frank, the dodd-frank bill, businesses like to look into the long term. they're not looking short term at all. they have to project out their business plans for the long term. host: what kind of a business are you in? caller: i'm not, but i'm a free market -- i'm a free market supporter. and under president obama and joe biden, they're more for big business. host: are you working down there? caller: no. no, i'm not retired. host: what kind of work do you do, joan? caller: well, i've done clerical work. i've done hospital work as a therapist. i worked as a nurse's aide for quite a few years. i've worked in all kinds of businesses. host: and what's the healthcare business like there in palm coast? caller: well, they are enlarging some of the services that will be available. healthcare is a booming industry. it has been, especially because of med

with paul ryan. >> andrea, good morning to you. as you mention all eyes on sandy, including these two presidential campaigns. more on that in just a moment. first over the next ten days expect to see the president and governor romney hit these battleground states hard. including ohio. perhaps the most critical of them all. it could ultimately decide who wins this race. yesterday governor romney health two events in the buckeye state including a rousing rally with paul ryan last night in north canton, ohio. the campaign says about 8,000 people showed up for that event, braving some pretty brisk temperatures outside last night. now he still has some work to do here. the latest cnn poll has the president up 50 to 46. four points. that's about half of what the lead was just a few weeks ago. governor romney has tipped into that lead but he still has some ways to go. as far as the president, he just wrapped up a 5,000 mile plus barnstorming tour through the battleground state. on friday he took the day off the trail. spent time doing interviews on the radio and television, including mtv. he

started. >> mitt romney will also visit iowa and colorado today, running mate paul ryan already wrapped up an event today in ohio. he now heads to pennsylvania, virginia and florida. we have two new nbc wall street marist polls out for you. president obama holds a 6-point lead among likely voters in ohio. 51 to 45%. then in the sunshine state the president gets support of 49% from likely voters. mitt romney coming in with 47%. let's head to mentor, ohio where the president is holding a campaign stop. we're following very closely with nbc's chris janzen's help. chris a good day to you. let's get to what the president is saying in his final pitch to the ohio voters. why is he there in mentor, specifically? >> reporter: good afternoon, alex. there is one group, one reason why the president is here. he's white work class voters. it's a group where the president has been behind nationally, having a tough time getting to 40%. but it's closette here closest . five points separated him and mitt romney in working class voters. take a look at the statistics in mentor. i know this very well. i grew u

is in florida, so's joe biden and paul ryan in wisconsin. all trying to squeeze out every vote possible in these key battlegrounds but on november 7th will the loser blame sandy for the loss? howard fineman with "the huffington post" media group is here. i have to start with chris christie. who would have imagined that a week out from election day he would be out singing the president's praised in very strong language? we have a clip of that right now. >> the spth all over this and deserves great credit. i appreciate that call from the president. very proactive and i appreciate that type of leadership. the president's been great. i spoke to him three times yesterday. he called me midnight last night. good working with the president. >> so look, i do think he's sincere here and been very emotionally moved after surveying the damage in new jersey but not only is his praise sort of politically good for the president but politically good for chris christie. >> there's no question that it does. chris christie's job to get all the resources possible from the federal government, from anybody w

. the same for mitt romney and paul ryan. they are feeling good about a lot of states where they've closed with the president, if they haven't surpassed him. what they're always hoping, too, tamron is that this is 1980 and that there's going to be a last-minute wave for romney. had they come to the polls, they go, i've really gone back and forth. it's time for something new and that he ends up winning, and maybe it's not by a landslide, but by a very healthy margin. and that's what they're counting on in these final days. >> keith, let me bring you in. i want to play a little bit of what the director of marist polling had to say about what we're seeing in some of these numbers. let's play it. >> mitt romney's favorable, unfavorable is still upside down in iowa, not in new hampshire or wisconsin. iowa is still maintaining that pattern that we've seen a lot this fall. so it hasn't moved for him. the other thing is iowa is a huge early voting state. and i think if the story of this election ends up being the re-election, if it does of president obama, it's going to be all about the early voti

mitt romney and his running mate paul ryan are talking about in economic policy, if you believe what they're saying at any given moment, would take us back to that era when business and wall street had a free hand and workers had no rights, their bosses were bound to respect. it was the preunion era when you had robber barronsons running ram hant over the rest of the country. mitt romney would return the country to an era when the balance of power was held by very large businesses in wall street and not by their employees. that said, if the economist and michael bloomberg have one thing in common, it's like they know how to do math. mitt romney's promises don't add up because his real business it turns out is marketing. he's microtargeting a message to whatever audience is in front of him at that very moment and then telling the next audience sometimes the opposite. it does depend on whether you believe, look, if he was still the 2003 or the 1990s era romney, bloomberg said he might have joted for him but this guy has change sod many times because he's constantly in the business of t

paul ryan's home state. the polls have been kind of all over the map there where obama had a big lead earlier and then it tightened. certainly paul ryan is helping in wisconsin. it is such a political state this year with the scott walker recall and republicans winning that. of those states i think wisconsin is the best shot for republicans and, you know, pennsylvania, usually goes to the, at the presidential level it goes to the democrat but, you know, we'll see. you know, you look back at 2008 primary between hillary clinton and president obama, hillary clinton thumped the president though the president did easily did defeat john mccain in 2008 in pennsylvania. jon: let me take you back into some of those fox news polls with some surprising numbers at least to me. one of them is the question, when asked, what best describes how the obama administration has handled radical muslim terrorists? 55% of americans say they think it was too soft. now this is a president who constantly talking about how, you know, under his administration we got usama bin laden. 55% say too soft on that. wha

? barack obama and joe biden, or mitt romney and paul ryan? or will it be a tie? 269 electrical votes, to 269 electoral votes. pat buchanan? >> the heart says romney/ryan, and head says too close to call, but i'm going to predict that romney/ryan will win all the 11 states of the old con fed racy, and barely win ohio and colorado, and he'll win with just over 270 electoral votes. >> obama biden will win with over 300 electoral votes, it will be a democratic senate, warren will win in massachusetts, and democrats will have 54 seats in the senate. >> i have to say i think this country really needs a change in leadership, given what's happened in the last four years, but i believe that owe -- obama will be reelected, it will be a close race, and ohio will make the difference, if romney carries ohio -- >> quickly -- >> close, i give obama the edge. i'm going to say 260. win withy and ryan will wi280 electoral votes. bye bye!

: to colorado now after hitting the trick-or- treat halloween trail in wisconsin, tuesday, paul ryan promised victoro election day. >> in 2008, it sounded -- victory on election day. >> in 2008, it count sounded great -- sounded great. all of this hope and change. it was, unfortunately, rhetoric. the rules -- results were disastrous. we can handle what they throw at us for five more days but can't handle what they will do for four more years. >> finally, we head to iowa where vice president joe biden stopd into a local diner, later taking issue with the recent comments on women's issues. >> the refusal to condemn the indiana senate orual candidate, richard mourdoch, tells a lot about what they believe. that old expression, silence can be deafening? >> reporter: hard to believe there are five days left. tomorrow, we begin to head into the final weekend of the campaign and today on the trail, november 1st, 2012. we're going to bring in fox 5 political analyst mark plotkin. earlier today, mayor bloomberg endorsed president obama. what does it mean for the campaign? >> reporter: like a collin pow
